You grow and harvest crops, weave fabric, cook food, and build houses for your dearly-departed guests. Your main gameplay actions in Spiritfarer are very hands-on. In the meantime, and it’s not like anyone has much of a schedule once they’ve passed on, your job as captain of this ship of souls is to make your guests as comfortable as possible and help them resolve whatever feelings are still keeping them tethered to their old lives. As the new Spiritfarer, you can’t take your guests to the Everdoor (which leads to the true Great Beyond, whatever it may be), until they’re ready. It turns out that the journey from life into death isn’t exactly a straightforward voyage. Death is technically all around you then, since everyone you encounter is a spirit taking their sweet time making their peace with their ultimate end. Instead, your character Stella is a spirit, who ferries souls through the afterlife to the great beyond. You don’t “die” when you take a bullet or fall off a cliff or anything like in more action-oriented games. Spiritfarer doesn’t have the usual video game representation of death. To start us off, let’s look at the compassionate, death positive farming sim of Thunder Lotus Games’ 2020 crafting sim about human life, Spiritfarer.ĬONTENT WARNING: This article contains discussions of death, dementia, aging, and grief, as well as heavy spoilers for Spiritfarer. We’ll dig into what death means, how this meaning is conveyed, and what this means for the game or for the players. With so much care taken with this final update, this DLC is bound to please fans and leave them wondering what Thunder Lotus will do next.Welcome to YOU DIED, a new column where I dive into depictions and discussions of death in video games. Spiritfarer has always been a game that is able to gently explore dark topics like death with tact and heart, while still managing to create the entertaining task loops that make management sims so addictive. While the addition of only two characters may seem modest to some, fans of the series know from experience that the addition of even a single character - like Lily from the first Spiritfarer DLC - can add a lot of depth to the game. Repairing the run-down hospital will undoubtedly be no simple undertaking for the player, and paired with new characters the player will need to get to know in order to aid in their passing, this update is sure to bring many hours of content to the game. Additionally, this is the first Spiritfarer DLC to include a new island, let alone one that needs rehabilitation. The two previous updates to the game only included one new spirit each, while this one includes two. This update will give the newest content compared to the others. In the update's trailer, the hospital appears to be repaired from its dilapidated state with the help of Stella, a task that appears to be one of the main new goals introduced in the update. These new characters will have the same sort of depth as other spirits in Spiritfarer, with lots to learn about them before they can pass into the afterlife. The DLC introduces a run-down hospital location where Jackie - a caretaker - and their patient Daria reside. This latest DLC is slated to give players two new spirits to get to know, alongside a new island location, new boat buildings and resources to collect, and a new event for the player to experience. Thunder Lotus Games shared the trailer for the third DLC on their blog this week, announcing the game's final update would be released on December 13th. In February of 2021, Thunder Lotus announced a roadmap of updates they would be releasing over the course of the year that would add new spirits, locations, stories, and more to the game at no additional cost to the player. To help these spirits cross over, the player must house and feed them with collectible resources, all while learning about the spirit's life. Spiritfarer is a unique twist on the usual formula of management sim game: Stella - the game's protagonist - is a ferry boat captain to the deceased, charged with fulfilling the needs of spirits and helping them transition into the afterlife.
